Roses for Mary

How to Pray the Rosary

Although this might look complicated at first glance, praying the Rosary is actually quite simple. For example, you can expect to pray the Our Father prayer when you're at a large bead, and the Hail Mary prayer for the small beads. Additional rules depend on which bead you've reached, as you can see below.

Steps for Praying the Rosary

  1. Begin at the crucifix by making the sign of the Cross and reciting the Apostile's Creed.
  2. Move to the first bead and pray the Our Father.
  3. Pray the Hail Mary three times, once per small bead, for the virtues of Faith, Hope, and Love.
  4. Before you move to the next bead, pray the Glory Be.
  5. Move to the next bead, announce the first Mystery, and pray the Our Father.
  6. Pray the Hail Mary ten times, once per bead, while you meditate on the Mystery.
  7. Before you move on to the next large bead, pray the Glory Be and the Fatima prayer.
  8. Announce the next Mystery and pray the Our Father.
  9. Repeat steps 6 to 8 as you move around the Rosary.
  10. Complete the Rosary by praying the Hail Holy Queen. Note that not all Rosaries have a centerpiece marking the end of the Rosary. If yours does not, simply end when you've completed all five mysteries in a set.
