A Word of Warning
This game does not deliberately provide ways to cheat; there are no "god mode" commands or anything. The methods described below use bugs and programming oversights in an attempt to cause beneficial changes to the game, and may corrupt your game files or simply take some of the fun out of exploring the depths.
Do not attempt any of these methods without backing up your game first.
Free Gold
There are two known ways to make money for nothing. Both exploit bugs, so use these methods at your own risk.
Trading Bug
There are two ways to trade items and gold between characters. One is to have them in the same party and use the GIVE function. The other is to load one of the characters and select the "Exchange Items" button on the main menu.
Trading gold via the main menu is not properly secured. In other words, it's possible for characters to trade negative amounts of gold, as there's no logic in the game to prevent this or ensure the "donor" has enough money to trade. This allows you to have one character "give" infinite amounts of gold to another, though the transaction is recorded properly.
If you use this trick, you may want to delete the "donor" character to prevent the character roster from becoming corrupted with impossible values.
Confinement and Holding Bug
If you can Charm a Slave (should be easy to do, as there's two lairs of them on the dungeon's second floor), take them to the Confinement and Holding section of the City. You'll actually be paid to realign them, so just change their alignment over and over until you have enough gold.
Compared to the other method, this seems relatively safe, if slow.
File Manipulation
Mordor stores its data in sixteen files in the "DATA" subdirectory. These are listed as MDATA1.MDR to MDATA15.MDR, which is fairly cryptic at first glance. But once you know what each file contains, you can manipulate them by copying or erasing them at your liesure. Just remember to do this when the game is not running - they could be overwritten or ignored otherwise.
MDATA4.MDR
This contains your character's information; ie, your "save game" if you will. Back it up periodically, but don't delete it unless you want to erase all of your characters too.
MDATA6.MDR
This contains the General Store's inventory. By copying and replacing this file as desired, you can control what items are in stock. In particular, you can fill the store with useful items (Potions, Scrolls, Tomes, Aard of Beings, etc) and then save the file for later.
MDATA8.MDR
Your current map of the dungeon. There is a very small possibility that this file will become corrupted due to a rare bug, so back it up from time to time. Or if you want to explore the dungeon all over again, just delete it. Mordor will create a new blank map for you when you start the game next.
MDATA15.MDR
This is the inventory of the Confinement and Holding cells. Swapping the file around can let you control what's in stock, just like with MDATA6. This can be a useful way to ensure quest monsters are always easily obtainable.
