Although lossy compression isn't the most common compression method, it is very popular for storing images, sounds, and video in digital formats. Thus, just about everyone who's used a computer or smartphone in the last twenty years has come across it.

JPEG and WEBP image formats are based on lossy compression, as are most audio and video formats. For the perposes of this website, only JPEG is used.
